PostSubject: Some Warrumbungle national park nocturnals   Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:40 am

We drove to the woolshed at about dusk to have a look around there. When we arrived and got out of the car we started to have a look around. We spotted Dubious dtellas Gehyra dubia, Variegated dtellas Gehyra variegata, Ocellated velvet geckos Oedura monilis, Eastern spiny-tailed geckos Strophurus williamsi, Bynoe’s geckos Heteronotia Binoei on the walls and on the sand around the shed.

We where photographing a Ocellated velvet gecko Oedura monilis for a bit then it decided it wanted to run away and ran to the nearest tree like thing, ME. It ran up one arm then down onto my shoulder. Eddie took a photo of me with it on me then we picked it of me and let it go on the ground.

We also found 3 tiny Prong-snouted blind snakes Ramphotyphlops bituberculatus and a few Ornate Burrowing Frog Opisthodon ornatus.

After about 2 hours of looking, we headed of back to camp. As we drove we looked out for reptiles and the first one we saw ran under the wheels of the car. I jumped out and was disappointed to see we had hit an Eastern spiny-tailed gecko Strophurus williamsi. It was still alive so I got a rock and put it out of its misery. It is easy to see how some stuff gets hit by cars as they are so small and we could not avoid the gecko even though we were driving 20km an hour. We continued to see geckos on the road, mostly Eastern spiny-tailed geckos Strophurus williamsi and Bynoe’s geckos Heteronotia Binoei. James suddenly saw a snake on the road so we jumped out to investigate. It was another Prong-snouted blind snakes Ramphotyphlops bituberculatus and a big one at that, about 35cm long. We photographed it and then moved it off the road into some bushes.

We continued driving then I spotted a snake on the road. It looked like a Curl snake Suta suta from the car but as I got out and had a look I saw that it was a Burton’s legless lizard Lialis burtonis. Unfortunately it had been hit by a car. They are my favorite animal so it was not easy when I had to put it out of its misery. The drive was turning out to be quiet depressing. We continued driving stopping to move an adult thick-tailed gecko Underwoodisaurus milii off the road and also an adult Ocellated velvet gecko Oedura monilis. Further on I spotted another snake, a Bandy bandy Vermicella annulata. We jumped out and had a look. Unfortunately it had also been hit by a car so Eddie got a rock and put it out of its misery. On the way back we stopped at the Information centre. We had a look around the walls and saw a Ocellated Velvet gecko Oedura monilis and a Robust velvet gecko Oedura robusta. We spotted another on the dirt near the centre and photographed that as well.

We then drove to a little bush walk near the camp that had a nice rocky outcrop and walked up there. We saw a few Thick-tailed geckos Underwoodisaurus milii, Bynoe’s geckos Heteronotia binoei and ocellated velvet geckos Oedura monilis.

Once we got back to camp we went to bed.
